There are certain sporting events that bring people together in a way that few others can. The FIFA World Cup is one of them.
This past month, Viking Sports partnered with Roots Athletic Center and Roots Soccer League in Westfield to host a World Cup Watch Party for the United States vs. Paraguay match. What started as an idea to bring soccer families together became a celebration of community, youth sports, and an important milestone for one of Western Massachusetts’ most impactful soccer organizations.
The event served two purposes.
First, it created an opportunity for soccer loving families throughout the Roots community to gather and experience the excitement of the World Cup together. Instead of watching from separate living rooms, families were able to cheer for Team USA alongside friends, teammates, coaches, and neighbors.
Second, the event celebrated the 10 year anniversary of Roots Athletic Center and Roots Soccer League. Over the past decade, Roots has grown into an important part of the Westfield community, serving approximately 600 children through its soccer programming and creating opportunities for young athletes to learn, compete, and build lasting friendships.
To help bring the vision to life, Viking Sports transformed the facility into a World Cup fan experience. A large projection screen and sound system broadcast the match while families spread out across the facility to enjoy a variety of activities. Children challenged themselves on the Viking obstacle inflatable, families stopped by the photo booth to capture memories, and our coaches kept the energy high with games and activities throughout the day.
A local food truck added to the festival atmosphere while a professional photographer documented the experience, capturing moments that reflected what youth sports are ultimately about: families spending time together, children being active, and communities connecting through shared experiences.
The event welcomed 185 registered attendees, including 77 children, and demonstrated what can happen when organizations work together around a common goal.
David Barton, Executive Director of Roots Soccer League and Roots Athletic Center, summed up the day best.
“I love the World Cup. Viking Sports brought the World Cup to Westfield and we brought the Viking guys out to celebrate.”
At Viking Sports, our mission is building community through impactful experiences. Events like this remind us why that mission matters. The final score of the match will eventually be forgotten by many, but the memories created between families, teammates, and friends will last much longer.
We are grateful to David Barton, the Roots Soccer League staff, volunteers, families, and everyone who helped make the event a success. Congratulations to Roots Athletic Center on ten incredible years and thank you for allowing us to be part of the celebration.
We look forward to creating more experiences like this in communities throughout Massachusetts and beyond.
